What is Design?

Design is a discipline, a process, a method, a way of thinking. Designers create. It is a function of the quality and way of thinking and of looking at things supported by highly honed and developed skills. At its core, design is about intent. It's the intentional creation of something that doesn't just fulfill a need but does so in a way that is functional, aesthetically pleasing, and user-friendly. It's about understanding human behavior, needs, and desires, and then crafting solutions that improve experiences and lives. Whether it's a product, a service, a system, or an experience, design starts with understanding the problem and ends with a solution that works.

Design is everywhere. It's in the sleek lines of a modern car, the layout of your favorite website, the ergonomic shape of a gaming controller, and even in the way your morning coffee is packaged. But what exactly is design? For many, design is simply about making things look good. While aesthetics are a crucial part of design, it's much more than that. Design is a process, a way of thinking, and a powerful tool for solving problems and creating value in our world.

In the phase of research and discovery, designers seek to understand the problem space through contextual enquiry by observing users in their existing environment thereby gathering insights. In the ideation phase, designers generate a wide range of ideas while encouraging creative thinking and exploration. The prototyping phase helps turn ideas into tangible representations in the form of quick sketches or interactive models that allow designers to test their ideas quickly and cost-effectively. When prototypes are tested with users to garner their feedback, designers obtain insights on what works, what doesn’t and why; based upon which they reiterate and improve their solutions. This final design is then implemented via thorough planning, production, advertising and launch; post which designers again go out in the field to evaluate how well their product or service met the needs of the users. Further insights are gained and ideas fur further improvements are developed.

Design has a huge impact on the lives in knowing and unknowing ways. Good designs is discreet, makes products intuitive, easy and enjoyable to use. It can enhance the usability and accessibility of everyday objects, making life easier for everyone. Beyond individual products and services, design also plays a critical role in addressing complex global challenges, such as sustainability, social equity, and health. Studying design opens up a plethora of opportunities by combining creativity with practical problem solving with a unique amalgamation of art and science. As a dynamic and ever-evolving field, design is also influenced by changes in technology, culture, and society, making it an exciting area to study and work in. By pursuing a career in design, one is equipped to shape the future, whether that is through innovative products, transformative services, or impactful social initiatives.
